Week 6 of the college football season was quite thrilling. A handful of high profile upsets headlined an exciting few days of ball. These stellar games were made possible by some awesome NFL Draft prospect performances. Here are some thoughts on what I saw.
- Michigan has three 2025 first round picks on their defensive line. Despite losing in an upset to Washington, the Wolverines defensive line made themselves known for four quarters of football. Kenneth Grant, Mason Graham, and Josiah Stewart are dominant at their respective positions and will hear their names called very early in the spring.
- Cam Ward is QB1 and I don’t see a challenger to that. Ward is dominating in his fifth year of college football and will be a Heisman finalist. Ward will be a 23 year old rookie, so he is still relatively young compared to other 5 year starters. Jayden Daniels being so good as a rookie will probably ease any concerns about advanced age skewing the draft analysis.
- That being said, Jalen Milroe is a first round pick. Even in the crazy loss to Vanderbilt, Jalen Milroe continues to look impressive every week. He has a ton of talent between his arm and athleticism, but he’s improving rapidly in the pocket and his accuracy is worlds better than it was a year ago. He is still a bit of a project player, but teams are going to fall in love with his physical tools and I expect him to interview well.
- Ashton Jeanty f***ing rocks. Every week the junior running back does something totally insane. He’s running through defenders and not losing speed. He’s averaging a first down every carry and has 1,000 rushing yards in five games. This is shaping up to be a really good running back class but somehow Jeanty is head and shoulders above his peers.
Players of the Week
Emeka Egbuka, Wide Receiver, Ohio State: Iowa’s secondary is no joke. Unless you’re Emeka Egbuka. The senior receiver caught nine passes against the Hawkeyes and three of them went for touchdowns. Egbuka was physical with great ball skills against a sticky secondary and he was able to turn a handful of contested situations into scores. Egbuka was slotted to be a first rounder a year ago, but injuries slowed down his junior season which prompted his return to school. This year he is looking back to form, healthy and athletic. If he can keep it up, he will hear his name called early in the spring.
Nic Scourton, Edge, Texas A&M: The SEC showdown between Texas A&M and Mizzou was supposed to be an exciting match up between two of the better teams in the country. Instead, the Aggies walloped the Tigers on both sides of the ball for four quarters. Nic Scourton had a standout game on Texas A&M’s defense. He had 1.5 sacks and made a few more stops behind the line, all while applying pressure for four quarters and making life hard on Brady Cook. The former Boilermaker has excelled at his new school and is playing his way into high NFL draft consideration.
