In a recent mailbag Q&A, Alec Lewis of The Athletic highlighted two positions that are likely to see additions for the Vikings this summer and in free agency next year: defensive tackle and cornerback. While efforts have been made to address these positions already this offseason, there is still more work to be done in Minnesota.
Regarding the defensive line, the Vikings are sticking with Harrison Phillips and Jonathan Bullard as two of their starters in a three-man front. However, Lewis pointed out that neither player excelled in their positions, with Phillips and Bullard ranking as two of the worst interior pass rushers in the NFL last year. Jaquelin Roy, a fifth-round rookie from last year, might see more playing time after a minor role last season.
The team made two free agent acquisitions by signing Jerry Tillery and Jonah Williams in March. Tillery had a resurgence last season in Las Vegas after falling out of favor with the Chargers, while Williams started for the Rams in all but one game in 2023. This provides the Vikings with flexibility in their defensive line rotation, but it remains to be seen who will step up and secure starting positions.
All four players mentioned – Phillips, Bullard, Tillery, and Williams – have contracts expiring after this season. This makes the position a focal point for next year’s free agency as well. Lewis already identifies Kenny Clark, Davon Godchaux, and Josh Sweat as potential targets for the Vikings in the next free agency cycle.
Switching to the cornerback position, Byron Murphy and Akayleb Evans are returning starters, with Shaquill Griffin joining as a new starter. Murphy may move to the slot if needed, while Evans has outperformed as a recent fourth-round pick. Andrew Booth, a former second-rounder, has struggled to establish himself in the rotation. Griffin has shown the potential to be a standout player at the position.
Similar to the defensive line, Murphy and Griffin will be free agents next year, making cornerback a key focus for 2025. Lewis mentions D.J. Reed and Charvarius Ward as potential future targets for the Vikings at cornerback.
While the suggested free agent targets may not be stars and are older players, they could still improve the Vikings’ roster. Minnesota has time to continue addressing these positions, and there’s a possibility that current players step up and prove their worth beyond this season.
