The Commanders used a first-round pick to bolster their cornerback position last year, and they followed that up with a second-round selection this year. Both Emmanuel Forbes and Mike Sainristil are poised to play significant roles in 2024.
Forbes had a stellar college career with multiple pick-sixes, but concerns about his size were raised. The Mississippi State alum, listed at 173 pounds in his rookie season, has reportedly bulked up this offseason. After some time as a healthy scratch in 2023, Forbes could be looking at more playing time in his second year.
During spring practices, the 23-year-old took reps with the first team, alternating at a starting spot with free agent addition Michael Davis, a seasoned player with extensive experience. Forbes had limited starts and defensive snaps last season, with one interception and 11 pass deflections, but struggled in coverage, allowing three touchdowns and a 103 passer rating as the nearest defender.
With a new coaching staff in place, including the addition of Dan Quinn, Forbes has a fresh start heading into his crucial second season in Washington. Performing well in training camp, especially during padded practices, will be crucial for Forbes as he aims for a starting role alongside Benjamin St-Juste on the outside. Sainristil, on the other hand, is expected to play in the slot as he transitions to the professional level.
A former receiver, the Michigan graduate showcased his coverage abilities in the slot during college. Sainristil was a key player for the Wolverines and replicating that success in Washington will be vital for a team that struggled defensively in 2023. Fielding a cornerback trio of Forbes, Sainristil, and St-Juste would signify a new era for Washington’s secondary, featuring a youthful group of cover men.
St-Juste is approaching the final year of his rookie contract, but there is potential for Forbes and Sainristil to remain with the team through 2028 if Forbes’ fifth-year option is exercised. A decision on that option won’t be made until after the 2025 season, with his performance under Quinn’s guidance likely playing a significant role.
