If you lose to the Carolina Panthers, you don’t get to be favorites over anyone else. I’m sorry, those are just the rules — or at least they should be. Atlanta hit absolute rock bottom Sunday, falling behind the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints in the NFC South division race all because they couldn’t muster more than seven points against the Panthers. Now, the Falcons are turning to Taylor Heinicke (again) in an effort to get back in the win column against the 8-6 Indianapolis Colts — winners of five in their last six — and BetMGM is actually giving Atlanta the slight edge at -1. I couldn’t disagree more. Here’s a look at that game and a couple more lines I disagree with in Week 16. Listen, man. Just throw all the stats out the window. I don’t care that the Falcons are good against the run. I don’t care that they’re swapping out the bad Desmond Ridder for a more mediocre Heinicke. I don’t even care that they’re at home where they have a 4-3 record. All I know is they just lost to the worst team in the NFL without that team scoring a single touchdown, and a week later they’re favored over a team currently in the playoff field. I’ll fade that scenario every chance I get. It’s only one point, but the edge should have been given to the Colts. I don’t particularly enjoy watching Mason Rudolph play football, so maybe my read is just off on this one, but the Bengals should be favored by more. It’s not that things can get worse than they already are for the Steelers, but if they didn’t trust a sixth-year Rudolph to be the backup on an offense this bad to start the season, I’m certainly not expecting him to be the guy to step in and make things better now. While Pittsburgh’s offense appears irreparably broken, Cincinnati has figured out how to win with Jake Browning. So, I like the Bengals to go on the road and win by at least a field goal. The minus symbol is next to Tampa’s name as of the time I’m writing, but for all intents and purposes, this game is a toss up. Still, I think it’s wild for a spread to be so close in a game featuring a team with top-10 Super Bowl odds like the Jaguars going against a team that was below .500 before last week. Tampa’s three-game winning streak — and Baker Mayfield’s 7-to-1 interception ratio in that span — clearly has oddsmakers feeling better about the Bucs. But beating the Panthers, Falcons and Packers doesn’t make them an equal with Jacksonville. Gannett may earn revenue from sports betting operators for audience referrals to betting services.
