The New York Jets reportedly want Zach Wilson back in the starting lineup, but he’s not eager about the idea and that’s understandable.
Wilson had been demoted to third string for the last two weeks, behind Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian. This move reflected the Jets’ desperation, as Boyle and Siemian’s performances were subpar. Now, despite the Jets’ desperate situation, Wilson is hesitant about returning.
Wilson has nothing to gain from returning to the lineup and his doubts are justified. The Jets have made it clear that they do not see him as the answer. They even considered replacing him when Aaron Rodgers became available last spring.
There were several opportunities to avoid this situation, but the Jets opted for Boyle as their backup, even though there were better veterans available during the offseason. Now, the Jets need Wilson’s help again, but he is hesitant to return and that is completely understandable.
Wilson is contractually obligated to continue playing for a team that would see even mediocre play as an upgrade, but he doesn’t have to immediately accept every decision the Jets make. He has concerns about returning to the starting lineup after being demoted, and he has every right to feel that way.
