Two Texans assistants, Bobby Slowik and Jerrod Johnson, have agreed to stay with the team. After retaining Slowik, the Texans also reached a deal to keep Johnson, the team’s quarterbacks coach, as reported by CBS Sports Jonathan Jones.
Johnson had been in contention for the Saints and Buccaneers’ jobs but decided to stay and work with C.J. Stroud again. The Texans have secured their top two offensive assistants for another season, with Johnson agreeing to an extension that includes a raise, according to reports from Jones and ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter.

The Texans will keep the Slowik-Johnson-Stroud trio together for a second season as they aim to build on their 13th-place offensive finish this season. The team saw a significant improvement in offensive performance, moving from 30th in the past two seasons to 14th in DVOA rankings for the most recent season, thanks to the impact of Stroud.
Johnson was hired by DeMeco Ryans from Kevin O’Connell‘s Minnesota staff, and with Stroud’s performance leading to more OC meetings, Johnson also had interviews with several other teams. Stroud, who ranked 15th in QBR, led the NFL in INT rate and played a key role in the Texans’ improved offensive performance.
New Orleans interviewed Johnson twice, and Tampa Bay is conducting an expansive search for a new OC. Johnson is expected to regroup and pursue OC interviews again in 2025, given Stroud’s potential and his own growing reputation as a talented coach.
With Stroud’s potential, it makes sense for Johnson to stay with Slowik and continue developing the young quarterback. Johnson could also be a coordinator candidate in Houston if Slowik were to land a head coaching job elsewhere next year.
