On Wednesday, “30” visits came to a close for this year’s cycle. Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton is returning from a foot surgery in January to repair a Jones fracture. Newton conducted a delayed pro day in Champaign on Tuesday, with over eight teams present according to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz. Despite not being listed by Schultz, Newton visited the reigning NFC North champions, the Detroit Lions. Newton, a first-team All-American and the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, played through his foot injury last season, totaling 7.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss. Ranked as the No. 32 prospect on Daniel Jeremiah’s NFL.com big board, Newton has garnered significant attention.
Here are the latest updates from the draft scene:
- The Detroit Lions are reportedly interested in NC State linebacker Payton Wilson, who won the Bednarik Award for last season’s top Division I-FBS defender. Wilson is ranked 41st on Jeremiah’s big board. Despite some concerns about his medical history due to past season-ending injuries, teams like the Cowboys are intrigued by Wilson’s potential contribution at linebacker.
- The Buffalo Bills hosted edge rusher Laiatu Latu and cornerback Cooper DeJean, two likely first-round defenders, as they look to strengthen their defense. With departures impacting their defense, the Bills are exploring options to address their defensive needs in the upcoming draft.
- Alabama tackle JC Latham booked a visit with the New York Jets, adding to his meetings with other teams like the Cardinals, Titans, and Bears. As one of the top-rated tackles in the draft, Latham’s visit with the Jets could signal a potential O-line investment for the team.
- Alabama cornerbacks Terrion Arnold and Kool-Aid McKinstry also secured visits before the deadline. Arnold met with the Titans, while McKinstry visited the Eagles. Both teams are looking to shore up their cornerback positions, considering the age and reliability of their current players.
- The Texans are showing interest in Missouri’s Ennis Rakestraw, a promising cornerback prospect with upside. Rakestraw’s impressive performance last season has caught the attention of Houston, who are looking to strengthen their cornerback corps with a potential high-impact player.
- While the first round is expected to see several tackles taken, teams like the Giants, Jets, and Commanders are scheduling visits with Arizona’s tackle Jordan Morgan. Morgan, a top talent at the position, has generated interest from multiple teams in the lead-up to the draft.
