The Steelers defense faced a setback with the league imposing an eight-game suspension on presumed starting nickelback Cameron Sutton. With Sutton sidelined for almost half of the season, it becomes crucial to find a replacement to bolster the secondary. The Athletic’s Mark Kaboly delved deep into the defense and explored potential options to fill the void as the team’s top slot cornerback at the start of the season.
After six seasons in Pittsburgh, Sutton was not part of the team’s defense in 2023 as he signed a three-year deal with Detroit. However, an arrest warrant was issued for Sutton shortly after his first season with the Lions due to a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, leading to his release by the Lions. Following a brief meeting with his former team, Sutton returned to the Steelers in June on a one-year deal.
The Steelers were aware of Sutton’s impending league suspension when they brought him back. With his return set for Week 10, the team must identify alternatives to fill his role in the meantime.
Two main candidates are being considered for the position. Veteran cornerback Josiah Scott, who spent the last three years with the Eagles after being traded by the Jaguars following his rookie year, is one option. Scott had a brief stint on the Steelers’ practice squad last year before returning to Philadelphia. Kaboly reported that Scott was initially lined up as the first-team nickelback in the spring before Sutton’s addition.
Another potential contender for the starting role is undrafted rookie cornerback Beanie Bishop, emerging as a dark horse favorite according to Kaboly. Beginning his college career at Western Kentucky, Bishop rose to prominence in subsequent seasons, eventually showcasing his talent with West Virginia. Bishop’s standout performances led to him securing a roster spot with the Steelers despite going undrafted.
With Sutton absent for the first half of the season, Bishop is poised to seize the opportunity to make a significant impact as an undrafted rookie in 2024. While he currently has a guaranteed roster spot, a strong showing in training camp could cement his position as a starter at the beginning of the season.
