Having been on the trade block for multiple seasons, Denzel Mims finally found his way to Pittsburgh after his initial 2023 relocation from New York to Detroit did not work out. The Steelers have decided to move on from the former second-round pick.
After being added to the practice squad in early October, the Steelers kept Mims on their roster for the remainder of the season and signed him to a reserve/futures deal in January. Eight months later, the Steelers are letting go of Mims, according to NFL.com’s Mike Garafolo. The team will waive the fifth-year veteran on Tuesday.
Despite another chance to develop, Mims did not see any game action for the Steelers last season. He was offered to stay for the 2024 offseason but is now being released. While the Steelers have uncertainties at wide receiver beyond George Pickens, it seems Mims is not part of their plans moving forward after Diontae Johnson.
Along with the Johnson trade, the Steelers released Allen Robinson earlier in the offseason. They did not secure a starter in free agency, but drafted Roman Wilson from Washington in the third round. The Steelers have a reputation for developing Day 2 wide receiver draftees, but the future remains unclear alongside Pickens if Wilson is not ready early on.
At 26, Mims was not expected to play a significant role in Pittsburgh’s receiver lineup. His time with the Jets was marred by trade rumors, and he was unable to establish a consistent role. After being traded to the Lions and subsequently winding up in Pittsburgh, Mims’ career has been tumultuous.
Two of the Steelers’ WR candidates, Van Jefferson and Scotty Miller, followed OC Arthur Smith from Atlanta, while Mims arrived during the tenure of Matt Canada. Although Mims’ chances are running out, there is a possibility he could find a new opportunity with another team before or during training camp.
