Alabama native, Brian Branch, was touted as one of the top safeties in the 2023 draft class, and proved it by being the first safety picked in the second round last year. Despite limited playtime at safety during his rookie season with Detroit, Lions senior writer Tim Twentyman predicts an increased role for Branch in 2024.
Even though Branch played primarily as a nickel cornerback in his rookie year, he still made significant contributions to the defense in 2023. With 74 tackles, 13 passes defensed, and three interceptions (including a touchdown), Branch was ranked the 14th best cornerback in the NFL by Pro Football Focus. The Lions’ safety positions were held by Kerby Joseph and a rotation of Tracy Walker, Ifeatu Melifonwu, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson who missed games due to injury.
With Gardner-Johnson now with the Eagles and Walker released, Branch has an opportunity to showcase his skills at safety. Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn prefers his nickelbacks to have safety experience due to the demands of the slot position in today’s game.
Branch has been recovering from an ankle procedure this offseason, but once he returns, he is expected to compete for a starting safety role. His versatility allows him to play in various defensive positions, providing the Lions with options in their thin safety lineup for the upcoming season.
