While it (brotherly shove) was talked about in detail at the competition committee’s gathering at the league meetings last offseason, it was never formally brought as a playing rule proposal to the 32 owners. This means there wasn’t one team in the league that felt strongly enough against it to have the play eliminated. That is probably going to change. It’s apparent this is going to be heavily debated among the competition committee made up of owners, general managers and coaches. It’s important to note that there isn’t a single person from the Eagles organization on the competition committee.
However, three of their divisional opponents are represented: New York Giants owner John Mara, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones and Washington head coach Ron Rivera. Though it will all come down to the voting, the most important opinion about the play may come from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. I was told by a league source that Goodell wants to see this play removed from the game permanently. If he gets his way, expect the Philly boos to be unbearable. NFL is still monitoring the quarterback push play – PFT There’s a report making the rounds that Commissioner Roger Goodell wants to see the Eagles’ quarterback push play, by whichever name it is called, out of the game for good. While we can’t vouch for Goodell’s personal feelings on the matter, the reality is that the league continues to keep an eye on the play. Per a source with direct knowledge of the situation, the NFL is monitoring it. There is no push, yet, to push the push play out of the game. At the end of last season, “many” clubs asked the league to look into it.
The league has noticed that roughly 18 teams have used some variation of the play. “Clubs have now expanded play options from this formation,” the source said. Ultimately, 24 owners would have to vote to get rid of the play. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie undoubtedly would vote “no” on any such proposal. Earlier this year, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones surprisingly endorsed the play. Could the lack of Eagles Saturday roster moves signal good news? – BGNSo, is Dallas Goedert actually going to suit up against the San Francisco 49ers despite officially being ruled doubtful to play? It was interesting to see that the Philadelphia Eagles did not make any temporary practice squad elevations ahead of Saturday’s 4:00 PM Eastern deadline. Last week, the Eagles called up Noah Togiai to be the third tight end behind Jack Stoll and Albert Okwuegbunam. There was thought that they might do that again for the 49ers game. But perhaps they didn’t feel the need for him because Goedert will be good to go? Above the Nest with Raichele #97: Lindsey Pallares on Brock Purdy’s development + matchups that the 49ers have the edge – BGN RadioRaichele Privette is joined by San Francisco 49ers Team Reporter, Lindsey Pallares (lindseylares). Lindsey shares her thoughts on playing at the Linc, discusses what’s been working so well for the Niners coming off of the BYE, touches on Brock Purdy’s development as a QB and a matchup she believes the 49ers have the edge. 3 keys to a 49ers victory: Time for revenge against the Eagles? – Niners Nation
With prolific offenses on both sides, the battle of moving the chains will be one to watch. The Eagles convert third-downs at a 47.3 percent clip, good for third in the NFL, while the 49ers convert at a 44.4 percent rate, good for fifth in the NFL. Additionally, neither side is elite at stopping third downs, as the 49ers rank 21st in opponent third down conversion rate, while the Eagles rank 30th. In a game between two elite teams, getting stops on third down will be important and could ultimately dictate how the game goes. Another element that comes with moving the chains is fourth-down situations. The Eagles convert 1.2 fourth downs a game, which ranks second in the NFL, and have converted on 76.5 percent of their opportunities, which is, by far, the best in the league. Game Preview – SF at PHI – Iggles BlitzThe Eagles offense needs a complete game from Jalen Hurts. He started slow the last two games and that’s a key reason they trailed by 10 at halftime in both. You don’t want to fall behind the Niners by 10.
Brian Johnson needs to figure out how to get his QB off to a good start. This might be a good week to run D’Andre Swift early. He’s gotten the offense going in the second half. Try that earlier. Lane Johnson will play. Having him back vs Nick Bosa is huge. Dallas Goedert wants to play, but it sounds like the team may wait one more week. Fletcher Cox is going to try to play. We’ll see how he feels on Sunday. The biggest loss for this game is Zach Cunningham. I would love to see an Eagles blowout, but this sure feels like another game that will be a back and forth affair. The Eagles have played in those games all year and are comfortable with pressure situations. SF hasn’t won a close game all year. They have either blown people out or lost. They had multiple 10-point leads vs the Rams before a last second FG cut the final score to 30-23. Don’t be fooled by that score. If the Eagles DL comes up big, they’ll win this game. If the Niners neutralize them via scheme and block well, SF could end up happy. NFL Week 13 picks, schedule, odds, injuries, fantasy tips – ESPNStat to know: The 49ers average 15.7 points in the first half, the fourth-highest mark in the NFL. The Eagles average 14.8 points in the second half, highest in the NFL. (The 49ers allow 6.6 PPG in the second half, fewest in the NFL).
How can Eagles slow down 49ers’ unstoppable offense? – NBCSPThe challenge facing the Eagles Sunday is slowing down this explosive offense with the NFL’s 19th-ranked defense and 29th-ranked pass defense and doing it without starters Fletcher Cox and Zach Cunningham. “The offense, it starts with 23 (McCaffrey) back there,” Eagles corner Bradley Roby said. “When 23 is back there, it’s a totally different offense. So when they’re able to get him going early, get his touches, that opens up things for everybody else. Because now, you’re trying to find out where 23 is, if it’s run or if he’s lining up at receiver or whatever, you’re trying to stop him. “But then you have to deal with Deebo, you have to deal with Kittle, you have to deal with Aiyuk and all the other weapons they have out there.” The 49ers’ offense is averaging 28 points per game, 3rd-highest in the NFL behind the Cowboys (32.3) and Dolphins (29.5). They’re seventh in rushing at 136 yards per game and No. 1 in passing yards per play at 8.9. In the eight games this year they’ve had Aiyuk, McCaffrey, Kittle and Samuel, the 49ers are 8-0 and have averaged 32 points per game.
