This means there wasn’t one team in the league that felt strongly enough against it to have the play eliminated. That is probably going to change. It’s apparent this is going to be heavily debated among the competition committee made up of owners, general managers and coaches. It’s important to note that there isn’t a single person from the Eagles organization on the competition committee.

However, three of their divisional opponents are represented: New York Giants owner John Mara, Cowboys COO Stephen Jones and Washington head coach Ron Rivera. Though it will all come down to the voting, the most important opinion about the play may come from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. Per a source with direct knowledge of the situation, the NFL is monitoring it. There is no push, yet, to push the push play out of the game. At the end of last season, “many” clubs asked the league to look into it.

The league has noticed that roughly 18 teams have used some variation of the play. “Clubs have now expanded play options from this formation,” the source said. Ultimately, 24 owners would have to vote to get rid of the play. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie undoubtedly would vote “no” on any such proposal. We’ll see how he feels on Sunday. The biggest loss for this game is Zach Cunningham. I would love to see an Eagles blowout, but this sure feels like another game that will be a back and forth affair. The Eagles have played in those games all year and are comfortable with pressure situations. SF hasn’t won a close game all year. They have either blown people out or lost. They had multiple 10-point leads vs the Rams before a last second FG cut the final score to 30-23. Don’t be fooled by that score. If the Eagles DL comes up big, they’ll win this game. If the Niners neutralize them via scheme and block well, SF could end up happy.
