Nick Pivetta Ties Boston Strikeout Record
Nick Pivetta is currently pitching in his eighth year in the major leagues. The 31-year-old has spent parts of five years with the Boston Red Sox, starting over 85 games for the ballclub. But on Thursday, Pivetta had a dominant stretch that tied a Boston strikeout record.
Entering Thursday’s contest with a 4.20 ERA, Pivetta was looking to rebound from a rough start against the Brewers. Facing the Tigers, he started the game by walking the leadoff batter. However, he quickly struck out the next two hitters on six and seven pitches, respectively.
As the game progressed, Pivetta continued his strikeout streak, fanning every batter he faced in the second inning. By the third inning, he was one strikeout away from tying the Red Sox record. Pivetta struck out three more batters in succession, matching a record set by one of the best pitchers of all time.
After tying the record with eight consecutive strikeouts, Pivetta ran into trouble in the fourth inning and allowed a home run in the fifth. Despite a strong performance, including nine total strikeouts, he was tagged with the loss as the Tigers scored two runs.
Nick Pivetta’s path to history includes being drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2013 and later traded to the Philadelphia Phillies. After struggling with the Phillies, he found success with the Red Sox, leading the league in starts in 2022.
