Upon signing 2023 UDFA Malik Cunningham from the Patriots’ practice squad in December, the Ravens were expected to have him as quarterback Lamar Jackson‘s backup. However, recent reports from Ryan Mink of the Ravens’ official website indicate that Cunningham is now listed as a wide receiver on Baltimore’s roster.
With the departure of Tyler Huntley in free agency and the re-signing of Josh Johnson, it was expected that Johnson and Cunningham would compete for the QB2 role. However, head coach John Harbaugh has designated Johnson as the primary backup quarterback, leading to Cunningham’s transition to wide receiver.
Despite concerns about the quarterback depth chart, the Ravens seem content with their choices after drafting Devin Leary in the sixth round. As a result, Cunningham’s athleticism and adaptability make him a valuable asset as a receiver.
While Cunningham had limited playing time with the Patriots, he has shown potential as a receiver during the Ravens’ offseason program. The team’s roster changes, including the departure of key players like Odell Beckham Jr. and Devin Duvernay, have opened up opportunities for Cunningham to establish himself in the wide receiver group.
With promising additions like Devontez Walker from the April draft, Cunningham has a chance to secure a significant role in the Ravens’ receiving corps. If he continues to excel, he could see playing time alongside Jackson, his former teammate at Louisville, during the upcoming season.
