UPDATE: We wrote this in 2022, but it feels pertinent with Bill Belichick out in New England. We’ve known this for years, and yet, NFL teams keep going back to the well. You can try to take Bill Belichick out of New England by hiring one of his assistant coaches or coordinators. But you can’t make your team the Patriots 2.0 in the process. Joe Judge and Brian Flores are the latest ex-Pats or those with ties to Belichick to be fired, with the pair losing their jobs in the past couple of days, although the two of them have had VERY different careers as head coaches. So let’s rank the worst to … the less bad. And maybe NFL teams will think twice about trying to hire a former Belichick assistant. () Two awful seasons that were almost a third until Tuesday. That gets you the bottom spot.
The good news for the ex-Lions coach is he was re-hired by Belichick after Detroit let him go. (
) Another ex-Lions coach … but hey, as a coordinator, he won a Super Bowl with the Eagles! So maybe he just wasn’t right as a head coach?
There was a 10-6 season with the Browns in 2006 … but generally his stints, including with the Chiefs and Texans, haven’t gone so well. (
) Two stints — with the Jets and Browns — didn’t go so great, but there was that one 10-6 season with Gang Green that ended with a playoff spot! That was his first season!
What could have been! He went 9-7 with the Jets in 2000, then resigned to be the head coach at Virginia. Overall, not the best of college careers. (
) There were some good Notre Dame seasons … and some not-so-good Kansas years.
Why so high with a record like that? I have a theory that he didn’t get a fair shake — the Broncos traded Jay Cutler that summer, and that left McDaniels with Kyle Orton and three games of Tim Tebow (McDaniels was fired before the Tebowmania year in 2011). And who knows what would have happened with the Colts if he’d gone there in 2018? UPDATE: He got a fair shake in Las Vegas and was bad again. Oh well. (
) He’s been pretty good in two seasons with the Giants, despite roster issues!
How do you fire a coach who went 10-6 in 2020 and who dug a 1-7 team out and finished 9-8? I’m still mystified, as are many others. I assume he’ll get another job and we’ll see if he’s then able to knock off the No. 1 name on the list.
Stop laughing. Let’s talk about this point for a sec: The #Jaguars will interview #Bama OC and ex-#Texans head coach Bill O’Brien tomorrow, source said. With 4 playoffs appearances in 6 seasons in HOU, O’Brien has a strong resume on the field. It fell apart when he got involved in personnel, and he has no plans for that this time. — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) January 12, 2022 I actually agree here! O’Brien the coach >>>>>>>> O’Brien the GM. He also had a great stint at Penn State before he had a successful run with the Texans … and then he got the GM job in addition to his coaching role. It all fell apart from there. If he gets a second chance? Maybe he proves that he’s the best ex-Belichick coach.
