Following the conclusion of the season, the Raiders honored the desires of many players by appointing interim head coach Antonio Pierce as the permanent head coach for the upcoming 2024 NFL season. Today, Las Vegas officially introduced the complete new staff under Pierce, revealing some updates that were not previously reported. While the hirings of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, offensive line coach James Cregg, senior offensive assistant Joe Philbin, quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, assistant quarterbacks coach Fred Walker, and running backs coach Carnell “Cadillac” Williams on offense, along with assistant head coach Marvin Lewis, were already known, here are the additional staff updates.
On the offensive side, with key positions like quarterbacks, running backs, and offensive line filled, Getsy decided to keep Edgar Bennett as the wide receivers coach. Bennett has a strong history with star wide receiver Davante Adams, having previously worked together in both Green Bay and Vegas. Former tight ends coach Jerry Schuplinski has moved on to become a senior offensive assistant with the Rams, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, so former Bears assistant offensive line coach Luke Steckel has been brought in as his replacement. Steckel, who previously coached tight ends in Tennessee, will be assisted by newly promoted assistant tight ends coach Mitch Singler, a former offensive quality control for the Raiders.
Furthermore, pass game coordinator Scott Turner has been retained after considering a position as Patriots offensive coordinator. Additionally, former Bears assistant tight ends coach Tim Zetts has joined the staff as an assistant offense. As previously reported, De’Andre Pierce, the head coach’s son, was expected to join the staff as an offensive quality control coach, but his role has been clarified as an offensive assistant.
Turning to the defensive side, it has been confirmed that defensive coordinator Patrick Graham will continue in his role, having been restricted from lateral moves despite interviewing for head coaching positions. The team also announced the retention of defensive line coach Rob Leonard and senior defensive assistant Rob Ryan. Furthermore, Matt Feeney has been promoted from defensive quality control coach to assistant defensive backs coach.
In terms of the defensive staff, Mike Caldwell was already known to be hired as linebackers coach and will also serve as run game coordinator. Former reports of Ricky Manning Jr. joining as defensive backs coach have been updated to list him as cornerbacks coach, with Gerald Alexander being hired for safeties, after coaching a notable secondary in Pittsburgh. Together, they replace Chris Ash and Jason Simmons. Andre Carter, formerly with the Jets, now holds the title of pass rush specialist.
Wrapping up the defensive hires, Marcus Lewis joins as assistant linebackers coach, and Josh Phillips as assistant defense. Lewis brings experience as a defensive analyst at Arizona State and five years with the Bengals, while Phillips previously coached at Sarasota HS (FL).
Regarding special teams, both special teams coordinator Tom McMahon and assistant special teams coach Derius Swinton II will stay on under Pierce. However, former NFL wide receiver Danny Amendola, brought on to work with returners, has not been retained, and Kade Rannings has been added as a second assistant special teams coach.
Lastly, the team announced that former director of football research and strategy Matt Sheldon will serve as game management coach. Additionally, Jon Gruden‘s son, Deuce Gruden, remains as an assistant strength and conditioning coach after being retained by the previous staff.
With the new head coach in place and an overhauled staff, the Raiders are poised for a fresh start in the 2024 season. After a brief tenure by Josh McDaniels, Pierce has injected new energy into the team, and with a full offseason to prepare with his team, the upcoming season in Las Vegas looks promising.
