When considering the Giants’ history of stability at the quarterback position, it is evident that the franchise has had limited turnover over the years. Phil Simms served for 15 years, Eli Manning for 16, and now Daniel Jones is entering his sixth season as the team’s QB.
Twenty years ago, Kerry Collins found himself in a similar situation to Jones. After five seasons as the Giants’ starter, Collins was let go as the team sought an upgrade following a disappointing 4-12 season in 2003. Collins was quickly replaced as the Giants made a trade for their desired QB prospect, Eli Manning.
Collins was given the option to stay on and mentor Manning, but disagreements over contract details led to his departure from the team. He then signed with the Raiders in a mid-offseason agreement, where he spent the next two seasons as their starting quarterback.
Collins’ time with the Raiders was marked by ups and downs, as he took over as the starter following an injury to Rich Gannon. Although he had the opportunity to play alongside legendary receivers such as Jerry Rice and Randy Moss, Collins’ tenure with the Raiders did not reach the same heights as his time with the Giants.
Ultimately, Collins continued his career with the Titans after his stint with the Raiders. He found success with the Titans, leading them to a 13-3 record in 2008. Despite missing out on a potential mentorship role with Eli Manning earlier in his career, Collins’ journey in the NFL included memorable moments and contributions to multiple teams.
