Quarterback Updates: Tua Tagovailoa, Aaron Rodgers, JT Daniels, and the Pittsburgh Steelers

Tua Tagovailoa is standing out by not holding in, distinguishing himself from the Dolphins‘ top negotiator among several others in the NFL. This includes Jordan Love‘s situation with the Packers, which has turned into a hold-in scenario. Despite Tagovailoa having a longer track record than Love, the fifth-year quarterback participated in Dolphins workouts on Wednesday. However, Tagovailoa only took two handoff reps in team drills at the beginning of camp, according to ESPN.com’s Marcel Louis-Jacques. Mike McDaniel explained that Tagovailoa’s workload in camp, without an extension, would be similar to OTAs where he did not participate in team drills. It was reported on Monday that this would be Tagovailoa’s approach.

The Dolphins have been in negotiations with Tua for months, and while there is some optimism, the QB1 for Miami has rejected at least one offer and the team may be standing firm on a price below Trevor Lawrence‘s $55 million per year deal. Lawrence’s $142 million deal may be more than the Dolphins are willing to offer. McDaniel mentioned (via Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald) that both parties are diligently working on reaching an agreement. There is still time to finalize a deal before the season begins, but the longer this process takes, the closer Tua gets to potentially being tagged with a high franchise tag number (possibly over $40 million) on Miami’s 2025 salary cap.

Here are the latest updates on quarterbacks from training camp:

  • Aaron Rodgers confirmed that a trip to Egypt led to his absence from minicamp and subsequently being fined by the Jets. Rodgers has faced criticism for his lack of leadership by skipping the only mandatory offseason workout, but he stated that his relationship with Robert Saleh has not been affected. “I’m an adult; I knew what I was getting into,” said Rodgers. “I knew the fine that was coming and also knew how much I wanted to be in Egypt. I wish there hadn’t been a conflict scheduling-wise, but it was what it was.” Rodgers, who based the trip on the 2023 offseason schedule of the Jets, had participated in OTAs before his abrupt departure.
  • Jayden Daniels is not the sole quarterback receiving first-string reps for the Commanders; he is sharing them with free agent addition Marcus Mariota, as reported by Sam Fortier of the Washington Post. While Dan Quinn has labeled it as a QB competition, Fortier suggests that Daniels is likely to secure the starting job. This follows a report indicating that the Commanders have no reason to withhold the starting position from the 2023 Heisman winner by giving Mariota bridge work.
  • Although Daniels and Mariota are splitting reps, Washington is having a genuine competition for the No. 3 quarterback spot. The team is putting rookie UDFA Sam Hartman against veteran Jeff Driskel, as reported by Fortier. Hartman, the former Notre Dame starter, played behind Driskel at the beginning of camp. It is unclear whether the Commanders plan to keep three quarterbacks, but the winner of this competition would likely be the team’s emergency option if only two quarterbacks are on the roster.
  • Prior to the merger of the USFL and XFL, Ben DiNucci played in the second season of the former league and served as the Broncos’ third-string quarterback last year. DiNucci, who was a teammate of Russell Wilson, had a workout with Wilson’s new team this week, as reported by KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson. The veteran also had a workout with the Steelers, who currently have Kyle Allen behind Wilson and Justin Fields.
