The Philadelphia Phillies are anticipating the return of third baseman Alec Bohm as they aim to avoid a three-game sweep against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday afternoon.
Bohm, the team’s leading RBI producer with 47, was absent from the lineup on Tuesday following his two errors in the previous game that contributed to a Giants victory.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson clarified that Bohm’s absence was pre-planned and not a punishment, reassuring that he will be back on the field for the series finale against Giants’ left-hander Kyle Harrison.
Despite Bohm’s absence, the Phillies struggled in Tuesday’s loss against left-handed pitchers from the Giants’ bullpen, with Kody Clemens filling in at third base for Bohm.
Giants’ manager Bob Melvin strategically used lefty pitchers early in the game to face the Phillies’ lefty-heavy lineup, resulting in a strong pitching performance by the Giants relievers.
In Harrison’s major league debut last August, the Phillies managed to score two runs off of him, with Bryce Harper hitting a two-run homer off his 16th pitch.
Harrison has since been undefeated in his recent starts, contributing to the Giants’ success with a 3-0 record and 3.67 ERA in his last nine outings.
The Phillies are counting on their lefty Cristopher Sanchez to stop their losing streak in the upcoming game, with Sanchez posting a 2-3 record and 3.15 ERA this season.
Sanchez faced the Giants as a reliever in his career, maintaining a 1.93 ERA over two appearances against them.
Luis Matos, who has been a standout player for the Phillies in May, delivered the winning sacrifice fly in Tuesday’s game, earning a promotion to the leadoff spot for his contributions.
Matos has been a key player with 19 RBIs in his impressive performances this month.
