Philadelphia Phillies Infield Situation & Changes for the Offseason

The Philadelphia Phillies infield is facing some uncertainty at various positions as they head into the offseason. While the starting infield of Bryce Harper, Bryson Stott, Alec Bohm, and Trea Turner may remain intact, there are potential changes on the horizon. Bohm is considered a trade candidate this offseason, with Stott also possibly being traded, although this scenario is less likely. Despite the challenges of trading Bohm and Stott, it is clear that some adjustments are necessary for the team. Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has indicated that the infield will likely stay the same, as reported by MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki. However, there are opportunities for changes at two specific infield positions.

Uncertainty at Catcher Position

While J.T. Realmuto is expected to return as the starting catcher, there may be some moves made to address catching depth behind him. Rafael Marchán is out of minor league options, and Garrett Stubbs is likely to be non-tendered. Dombrowski mentioned a plan to reduce Realmuto’s workload in the upcoming season, with Marchán poised to serve as the backup catcher. In 2024, Marchán demonstrated his potential with impressive stats during Realmuto’s absence. Stubbs, although valuable for depth, may be let go for roster flexibility.

Stability at First Base

Bryce Harper’s successful transition to first base solidifies the Phillies’ infield at that position. Harper’s standout performance in the 2024 season and his defensive prowess as a NL Gold Glove finalist make him a cornerstone player for the team. With his improved defensive metrics at first base, Harper is set to continue excelling in this role in the upcoming seasons.

Challenges at Second Base

Bryson Stott’s future at second base is uncertain, as he faces the possibility of being traded. Despite his defensive improvements and Gold Glove finalist status, Stott’s offensive numbers in 2024 were a regression from the previous season. With the flexibility to trade him and his age nearing 27, Stott’s tenure at second base may be up for evaluation by the Phillies.
