The Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles experienced a lot of excitement at the start of their three-game series — and perhaps it was just the beginning.
They will face off in the second game of the series on Saturday in Baltimore, following the Phillies’ 5-3 victory in 11 innings on Friday.
“It was a great game,” remarked Orioles manager Brandon Hyde. “It was a good display of baseball. We just couldn’t get that key hit.”
The series opener was so intense that the Phillies initially appeared to win in the 10th inning, but a replay review overturned what would have been the final out at home plate. Instead, Cedric Mullins of the Orioles scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
Prior to the 11th inning, rain caused a delay of 71 minutes.
This series is significant as it marks the first time both teams are meeting in Baltimore with winning records. Many Phillies fans have already secured their tickets.
On Saturday, the Orioles will send Grayson Rodriguez (7-2, 3.27 ERA) to the mound. Rodriguez has been victorious in his last two starts this month, against Toronto and Tampa Bay.
Rodriguez’s aim is to pitch deeper into games as he has yet to complete seven innings in a start this year.
“I’m working on being more accurate towards the end of my outing,” he stated.
Rodriguez expressed confidence due to the Orioles’ success this season and the strong lineup that supports him.
“I’m feeling confident at the moment,” he said. “Our defense is playing well. I’m grateful for the offense we have.”
Rodriguez has not faced the Phillies in his two seasons in the majors.
Philadelphia’s starting pitcher will be Taijuan Walker (3-1, 5.40 ERA), who is seeking his first win since May 11. Walker has pitched at least five innings in his last three starts.
In six of his eight starts this season, Walker has given up at least one home run. However, he did not allow any in his recent outing against the New York Mets.
This indicates that Walker is regaining his form.
“I think he’s improving,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson. “We’re hoping to see an increase in his velocity because it will enhance his other pitches. We’re hoping for continued progress.”
Walker last pitched against the Mets in London, conceding two runs in 5 2/3 innings. The atmosphere in Baltimore for his next start is expected to be lively, following the excitement of Friday night.
In his nine career meetings with the Orioles, Walker has a 4-1 record with a 2.54 ERA.
Outfielder Brandon Marsh might join the Phillies this weekend. Marsh, who has been recovering from a hamstring injury, has been on a rehab assignment with Double-A Reading. He played on Thursday and Friday nights for the Fightin Phils, collecting four singles in total.
“I’m not certain about what lies ahead,” Marsh stated in Reading.
Marsh expressed disappointment at not being with the major league team, which continues to perform well. He anticipates a return soon.
“I believe it demonstrates the strength of our organization,” Marsh commented on the Phillies’ success. “It showcases the organization’s work ethic.”
