The Philadelphia Phillies have been dominant at home lately.
Scoring two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Phillies secured a 4-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday, marking their 25th victory in their last 29 home games.
Looking to continue their hot streak, Philadelphia will be aiming for a series sweep against the Padres on Wednesday afternoon.
Nick Castellanos, who hit a walk-off RBI double, had four hits in the game on Tuesday after coming into the series in an 0-for-17 slump.
“It’s just joy, man,” Castellanos expressed in a postgame interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia. “To come back and rally together, it’s awesome.”
Kyle Schwarber’s home run and single, along with Brandon Marsh’s two hits and an RBI, contributed to the Phillies’ victory as they strung together four straight hits in the ninth inning without making an out.
“Fightin’ Phils, man,” Castellanos remarked.
Despite going 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position and leaving 14 on base, the Phillies delivered when it counted most against the Padres’ closer, Robert Suarez.
“These guys never quit,” manager Rob Thomson commended. “They just keep going.”
Left-hander Ranger Suarez (10-1, 1.77 ERA) will take the mound for the Phillies on Wednesday.
In Suarez’s last start against the Orioles, he allowed only one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He mentioned that pitching on the road felt like playing at home due to the support from fans.
Suarez boasts a 3-0 record with a 2.16 ERA in six career games against the Padres.
On the Padres’ side, they will be looking to avoid a winless road trip after being swept by the Mets and losing consecutive games to the Phillies.
Luis Campusano’s home run and two RBIs weren’t enough for the Padres on Tuesday as Robert Suarez couldn’t hold a one-run lead in the ninth, leading to their ninth consecutive road loss.
“Did a lot of things right,” Padres manager Mike Shildt acknowledged. “Just the end wasn’t good enough.”
Righty Matt Waldron (4-6, 3.66) is expected to start for the Padres.
Waldron, who allowed two runs in seven innings in his last start against the Mets, has given up two earned runs or fewer in his last seven starts.
“He was great. Waldy gave us more than a chance,” Shildt praised. “Did a tremendous job.”
In his only game against the Phillies, Waldron pitched 4 2/3 innings from the bullpen, surrendering three runs on eight hits without receiving a decision in the Phillies’ 9-7 win last September.
Fernando Tatis Jr. (quad) sat out Tuesday’s game, and his status for Wednesday is uncertain.
Ha-Seong Kim, who usually starts, also received the day off on Tuesday as Shildt acknowledged the importance of giving players rest during a busy stretch of games.
