The Philadelphia Phillies showed no signs of being affected by their recent sub-.500 road trip.

Following losses to the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, the Phillies returned home and dominated the San Diego Padres with a 9-2 victory, backed by an 18-hit offensive onslaught on Monday.

Looking to continue their success at home, the Phillies will take on the Padres again on Tuesday.

In the previous game, Kyle Schwarber of Philadelphia hit two home runs, marking his 28th multi-homer game and driving in four runs. Alec Bohm also contributed with two singles and a three-run homer, reaching a total of 60 RBIs for the season.

Catcher Rafael Marchan had a standout performance, with four hits and two RBIs in his first career four-hit game. With J.T. Realmuto injured and Garrett Stubbs resting, Marchan seized the opportunity to deliver for the team.

“I’m grateful and blessed to be able to contribute to the team’s victory,” Marchan expressed in a postgame interview on NBC Sports Philadelphia. “My priority is to stay healthy and help the team succeed.”

Bryce Harper, Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner, and Brandon Marsh each added two hits to Philadelphia’s impressive offensive display. Turner made his return to the game after being sidelined since May 3 due to a hamstring injury.

“It’s great to be back home,” said Phillies manager Rob Thomson.

On Tuesday, the Phillies will look to Aaron Nola (8-3, 3.48 ERA) to lead them to another victory.

In his recent outing against the Red Sox, Nola struggled, allowing 11 hits and eight runs in just 3 2/3 innings.

“He had some issues with pitch placement, and his fastball was a bit high,” Thomson commented. “It was one of those off days.”

Nola recognized his shortcomings in the game, stating, “I just couldn’t seem to find my rhythm. I’ll move past it and focus on the next game.”

Nola has a career record of 3-4 with a 3.14 ERA in nine starts against the Padres. In their previous matchup on April 26, Nola recorded 10 strikeouts in eight innings, allowing three runs in a 9-3 victory.

Although Manny Machado contributed with two hits and a run for San Diego in Monday’s game, the Padres suffered their fourth consecutive loss.

San Diego struggled with runners in scoring position, going 0-for-4 in the game following a series sweep by the New York Mets.

Despite the recent losing streak, manager Mike Shildt remains confident in his team’s abilities.

“I have complete faith in this team for the long run,” Shildt affirmed. “I have no doubts about their potential. We will overcome this rough patch.”

Michael King (5-4, 3.58 ERA) is anticipated to start for the Padres on Tuesday.

In his most recent start against the Oakland Athletics, King pitched five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out a season-high 12 batters.

“A successful start means going deep into the game,” King emphasized. “Even with 12 strikeouts, pitching only five innings doesn’t benefit the team as much as a longer outing would.”

Reflecting on his performance, King acknowledged the need for consistency, stating, “Efficiency is a key factor. While strikeouts are beneficial, avoiding walks and long at-bats is crucial for a solid performance.”

King holds a record of 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in two games against the Phillies. His sole start against Philadelphia on April 28 resulted in six runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, ending in an 8-6 loss.
