The Phillies and catcher Cam Gallagher have agreed to a minor league deal, as reported by Matt Gelb of The Athletic. This deal includes an invitation to big league Spring Training, with Gallagher already present at the camp.
At 31 years old, Gallagher has played in parts of seven big league seasons, with the first six being with the Royals organization. From 2019-2021, he served as the primary backup to Salvador Perez, posting a .251/.315/.364 slash line across 118 games. Defensively, Gallagher stood out with strong framing numbers and +11 Defensive Runs Saved during his time with the Royals.
Kansas City traded Gallagher to the Padres before the 2022 trade deadline, where he was later claimed off waivers by the Orioles. After a stint with the Guardians, Gallagher signed with the Phillies to provide depth behind J.T. Realmuto and Garrett Stubbs. The move adds protection to the team’s catching depth as they aim for a third consecutive playoff appearance in the 2024 season.
