According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Patriots have reached an agreement with fourth-year running back Rhamondre Stevenson on a four-year, $36MM extension. The deal includes $17MM fully guaranteed and a $8MM signing bonus for Stevenson, who was set to play out the final year of his rookie contract in 2024. This extension will keep him with the team through 2028.
Additionally, Stevenson’s contract includes $12MM in incentives, with the potential to earn up to $48MM based on reaching certain milestones like 1,400 yards and Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors. His annual average value (AAV) of $9MM now ranks seventh among running backs in the league.
The Patriots have invested in keeping Stevenson on their roster amidst changes in the coaching staff and front office. New head coach Jerod Mayo has shown confidence in Stevenson, who has been the team’s lead back for the past two seasons. This deal signifies the Patriots’ commitment to utilizing Stevenson in their offensive game plan for years to come.
With a career yards per carry average of 4.5, Stevenson has proven to be a valuable asset to the Patriots’ ground game. Despite dealing with injuries in 2023, he remains a key component of the team’s offensive strategy moving forward. The Patriots have also made moves to retain other key players like safety Kyle Dugger, right tackle Michael Onwenu, and tight end Hunter Henry, showcasing their dedication to maintaining a strong roster.
As the Patriots’ offense evolves with new faces in the 2024 season, Stevenson’s role as a focal point in their rushing attack is solidified. With the addition of rookie quarterback Drake Maye and a mix of veteran and rookie pass-catchers, Stevenson’s presence in the backfield will be crucial to the team’s success both in the upcoming season and beyond.
