The Panthers are actively searching for cornerbacks. Following a look at Jerry Jacobs last month, the team is now bringing in Anthony Brown for a workout, as reported by ESPN’s David Newton.
The former sixth-round pick made a name for himself in Dallas, starting 69 of his 94 games over seven seasons with the Cowboys. A torn Achilles tendon cut short his 2022 season, and he played for multiple teams in 2023, including the Steelers, 49ers, and Jets. Brown appeared in two regular-season games with the 49ers.
Despite his journey, the veteran could offer valuable experience at cornerback for the Panthers. With Donte Jackson and Jeremy Chinn no longer in the lineup, the team is looking for a new CB option alongside former first-round pick Jaycee Horn. While Dane Jackson is currently projected as Carolina’s CB2, the team is still exploring options like Jacobs and former Panthers star Stephon Gilmore.
Additional updates from Carolina:
- Second-round running back Jonathon Brooks will not play in the preseason, according to Dave Canales (via NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe). Despite tearing his ACL last November, Brooks’ impressive 1,400-yard performance led to him being the first RB drafted in 2024. Canales mentioned that the rookie could potentially return in Week 3 or 4, with a potential stint on PUP, as noted by Joe Person of The Athletic.
- Canales confirmed today that the Panthers are still on the lookout for a quarterback (via Person). With Andy Dalton dealing with a quad injury, the team is exploring options beyond Bryce Young and UDFA Jack Plummer. They are considering both veteran and younger players, with experienced free agents like Ryan Tannehill and Trevor Siemian on the radar.
- Dan Morgan emphasized that there are no immediate expectations for this season, with a focus on long-term goals (via Person). With new leadership in place, including head coach Canales, the Panthers are taking a patient approach to building for the future after a challenging 2023 campaign.
- Person reported that the Panthers are still in need of outside linebacker help. With both Amare Barno and D.J. Wonnum sidelined, the team is relying on players like K’Lavon Chaisson opposite Jadeveon Clowney. Chaisson has shown promise early in training camp, displaying explosive play on the edge.
