Frank Reich, who served as the Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator during their Super Bowl LII victory over the New England Patriots, has been fired as the coach of the Carolina Panthers, the team announced on Monday. “I met with coach Reich this morning and informed him that he will not continue as head coach of the Carolina Panthers. I want to thank Frank for his dedication and service, and we wish him well,” said owner David Tepper in a statement. “Effectively immediately, special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will serve as our interim head coach. Senior assistant Jim Caldwell will be a special advisor to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, who will take over play calling duties.”
Reich’s tenure in Carolina was disastrous, with the team holding a league-worst 1-10 record. The Panthers also traded their 2024 first-round pick to select quarterback Bryce Young No. 1 overall in this year’s NFL Draft. Young has struggled in his rookie season, throwing nine touchdowns to eight interceptions. Rumors suggest that Reich preferred to select Offensive Rookie of the Year C.J. Stroud with the first pick, but due to ownership decisions, Reich has been let go after just 11 games.
Reich was fired during the season last year by the Indianapolis Colts, but he went 40-33-1 in parts of five seasons with the team. It’s unlikely that he will get another chance to lead a team after this debacle, but he may still be sought after as a possible offensive coordinator in 2024.
Reich’s connection to the Philadelphia Eagles, where he previously served as offensive coordinator, as well as his coaching history with current Eagles offensive coordinator Brian Johnson, could make him a potential candidate for a return to the Eagles if Johnson were to secure a coaching job of his own.
