During the 2024 NFL Draft process, the Lions were the only team to recognize the unique potential in Sione Vaki. They saw Vaki as a running back, unlike others who viewed him as a safety. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported this. Vaki, a rookie from Utah, will begin his NFL career in a new position after playing safety in college.
Vaki was able to enter the NFL draft after just two years of college football due to his three-year mission as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After graduating from Liberty HS (CA) in 2019, he joined the Utes, officially becoming part of the team’s 2021 signing class after his mission.
In 2022, as a true freshman, Vaki played as a safety in five of 14 games, recording 41 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble, and three passes defensed. Injuries in the Ute’s running backs room led to Vaki’s dual role in 2023, playing both safety and running back.
In addition to his defensive accomplishments, Vaki showcased his abilities on offense, averaging 7.5 yards per rush and displaying impressive receiving skills. Despite being primarily seen as a safety prospect in the draft, the Lions saw Vaki as a running back and traded up to select him in the fourth round.
Vaki may not immediately compete for offensive snaps but is likely to contribute as a special teamer due to his defensive experience. He could also provide depth at safety if needed. For now, Vaki is listed as a running back on the Lions’ roster.
