The Philadelphia Eagles held their first and only open practice of this year’s training camp on Thursday, drawing nearly 50,000 fans to the event. Head coach Nick Sirianni addressed the media before the practice session, discussing the team’s practice schedule, the game-like atmosphere of open practice, and the progress of quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Here is a breakdown of what the head coach had to say:
On their practice schedule
Sirianni explained the unusual practice schedule for the week, with only one day on the field in a four-day period. He noted that the team had been practicing rigorously for eight of the nine days leading up to that, as well as Thursday night’s significant practice session and the upcoming days leading to the first preseason game. The coach has yet to determine the playing time for the starters in the preseason game against the Ravens, emphasizing the importance of getting game-like experience for both coaches and players.
On Thursday’s open practice
“I think it’s very game-like. Tonight, when you get in the stadium, it’s just different, right? And for the amount of people that are going to be in here tonight, I can’t—I mean, I don’t know, but I can’t imagine that many other teams have the same type of attendance as we do here, and so that will be great for the atmosphere.”
Sirianni highlighted the game-like atmosphere of the open practice, with players going through warm-ups and preparing as they would for a real game. The coaching staff focused on simulating game scenarios, working on drives, and communication regarding critical decisions on third and fourth downs.
On Jalen Hurts
Sirianni praised Jalen Hurts for his sharp performance throughout training camp, commending the quarterback for his control of the offense and high level of play.
“He’s been in complete control of the offense, and he’s really operating at a really high level, knowing where to go with the football, making accurate throws, moving in the pocket to buy extra time or if it turns into a run. So, he’s had an outstanding camp.”
The head coach noted Hurts’ continued growth and improvement since the Spring, highlighting his consistent development.
On the offensive line depth
Sirianni discussed the limited time in pads leading up to the open practice, acknowledging the challenge of finalizing the starting offensive line due to injuries and rotational changes. He expressed optimism about the potential return of Landon Dickerson and emphasized the importance of giving new and young players opportunities to gain experience.
Regarding the signing of Nick Gates, Sirianni emphasized the value of adding depth and competition to the team, praising Gates’ abilities and the impact he can have on the roster.
