Several weeks after guiding the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory, Matthew Stafford signed a four-year, $160MM contract with the Rams in March 2022 at a slight discount. Following trade rumors in the wake of Stafford’s injury-filled 2022 season, the veteran quarterback responded with a strong performance that earned him his first Pro Bowl invitation. Stafford also led a young Rams team to a playoff berth.

Amid discussions about adding guarantees to his contract beyond 2024, Stafford has expressed interest in securing his future with the team. Sean McVay confirmed that discussions have taken place between the Rams and Stafford.

Despite his desire for post-2024 security, Stafford has no plans to jeopardize his participation in training camp. The 36-year-old quarterback stayed healthy last season after being managed due to an elbow injury during the 2022 training camp. Missing camp time could hinder the development of other players, even though Stafford is well-versed in McVay’s offense.

With an average annual value of $40MM, Stafford’s contract now ranks tied for 12th in the NFL. The emergence of the $50MM-per-year club, which includes Jared Goff, does not seem to be a concern for Stafford. Following the Rams’ playoff loss to the Lions, McVay assured that Stafford will remain the team’s starting quarterback in 2024. However, guaranteeing his contract beyond 2024 would make it challenging for the Rams to make a change at quarterback.

Stafford’s stance indicates his intention to play in the NFL for a 17th season next year. Retirement rumors have circulated, but Stafford has dismissed them, indicating his commitment to continue playing. The Rams have him under contract through 2026.

If Stafford misses any camp time, Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett will receive more opportunities. Bennett, who spent his rookie season on the reserve/NFI list, returned for the offseason program after dealing with mental health issues. Meanwhile, Hunter Long rejoined the Rams’ offseason program late after recovering from an MCL tear, providing depth at tight end along with new addition Colby Parkinson amid uncertainties surrounding Tyler Higbee‘s ACL injury.
