The Commanders hired former Cowboys DC Dan Quinn as their head coach, making them the eighth and final team to do so this offseason. Washington’s search for a head coach included several twists before ultimately landing on Quinn. Once Adam Peters was installed as general manager, Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson emerged as the top candidate for the HC vacancy. However, the Commanders took a more open-minded approach late in the search process, leading Johnson to withdraw from consideration for the head coach positions with the Commanders and Seahawks. With Johnson out of the running, Washington and Seattle turned their attention to Mike Macdonald as a top target.
Ultimately, the Seahawks offered Macdonald a six-year contract, which influenced his decision to join Seattle. This has led to concerns that Dan Quinn may have been no higher than third on Washington’s priority list. However, Quinn’s leadership traits have earned considerable praise during Washington’s vetting process.
Now with Quinn in place, along with his offensive and defensive coordinators, the Commanders aim to move forward from a disappointing final campaign under Ron Rivera. Despite the twists and turns in their coaching search, both Washington and Seattle have secured their respective coaches and can now proceed with their offseason plans.
