In late May, we learned that the Ravens had officially shifted Malik Cunningham from quarterback to wide receiver on their roster. Cunningham, a fan of starting quarterback Lamar Jackson, initially resisted the position change but has since embraced it, according to Ravens editorial director Ryan Mink.
Throughout his rookie year, Cunningham received guidance from former Patriots wide receivers Julian Edelman and Jakobi Meyers, who transitioned from quarterback to receiver in their careers. They assured Cunningham that his quarterback instincts would still be valuable in his new role.
Later in his rookie season, Cunningham joined Baltimore’s backup group alongside Tyler Huntley and Josh Johnson after being signed from New England’s practice squad. The team then approached him before the draft with the proposal to switch to wide receiver, a decision that influenced their draft choices. Despite initial disappointment, Cunningham eventually committed to the move, saying, “I’m all in.”
Cunningham focused on contributing to the team after accepting the position change, impressing at team activities and minicamp. With his playmaking ability, he has the potential to make an impact for the Ravens in the upcoming season. By embracing his new role, Cunningham has positioned himself well to secure a roster spot.
