Currently, there are five head coach openings in the NFL, and that number could soon increase to six depending on the decision of the New England Patriots regarding Bill Belichick.
If the Patriots are wise, they will make sure it does. The reason being that a highly sought-after coaching candidate could soon become available, and it won’t be to replace the six-time Super Bowl champion coach.
After leading Michigan to its first national championship since 1996, it appears that Jim Harbaugh may leave the college game for the professional level. When this happens, every team in need of a coach should be eager to interview him.
Harbaugh, aged 60, may not be everyone’s favorite, but his track record speaks for itself. He has achieved success at every coaching position. He had six 10-win seasons in nine years at Michigan, culminating in this year’s 15-0 record and national championship. He also set the single-season wins record at Stanford with a 12-1 record in his final year in 2010. Additionally, he found success in the professional arena, with a 44-19 record in four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, making the playoffs three times and leading them to Super Bowl 47.
Furthermore, his players and staff have deep admiration for him. Despite Michigan’s involvement in a sign-stealing scandal, the team rallied behind Harbaugh during his three-game suspension as if he were a martyr. Interim coach and offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore was emotional when speaking about his love for Harbaugh after their first win without him. The entire team expressed their desire to continue winning for him.
I witnessed this firsthand after their second game without Harbaugh when the perfect season almost ended in a disappointing loss against Maryland. I believed that the team’s dedication to the head coach was unsustainable and potentially detrimental. However, they proved me wrong by continuing to win and ultimately securing the championship.
For years, there has been speculation about Harbaugh’s potential return to the NFL. This time, however, the rumors feel more substantial. The NCAA is pressuring him, and the landscape of college football has changed significantly. All signs indicate that now is the time for him to make the leap. Any team with doubts about their current head coach should pursue him fervently.
Harbaugh has a history of improving every team he has coached.
