With the 2024 NFL Draft now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to take a closer look at the Philadelphia Eagles’ rookie class. Over the next few weeks, I will be diving into film rooms for all nine draft picks as well as some undrafted free agents. While many scouting reports may sound similar, I aim to provide film clips to support each analysis and discuss how each player fits with the Eagles. I was able to access All22 footage for several rookies, but I cannot share those clips on my Twitter account to avoid being blocked, so I will be using content from other sources here. Let’s get started!
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is the focus of this film room analysis. Here are some strengths and weaknesses of the Clemson linebacker:
RAS Strengths:
– Football bloodline (son of former NFL player Jeremiah Trotter).
– Good speed and athleticism, able to cover sideline-to-sideline and excel in pursuit.
– Utilizes his smaller frame to his advantage, quick to avoid blocks.
– Exceptional instincts and field awareness, especially when attacking downhill.
– Strong in zone coverage, adept at reading the quarterback’s eyes.
– Displays good hands and has solid interception numbers.
– Times blitzes effectively, showing proficiency as a blitzer.
– Plays with physicality and aggression, making impact plays.
Weaknesses:
– Light weight and disappointing agility score at the combine.
– Struggles against opposing linemen at the point of attack.
– Misses some open field tackles.
– Can be overaggressive, leading to over-pursuit.
– Lacks elite change of direction abilities.
Overall, Trotter is known for his instincts and hard-hitting style but may lack the size and explosiveness desired in a starting linebacker. Some pre-draft evaluations suggest he could be a solid backup or average starter in the NFL. In the Eagles’ defensive scheme, Trotter’s fit as a linebacker may not offer significant improvement to the current roster, considering the team’s existing weaknesses in this position group.
Despite his talent, Trotter’s fall to the fifth round of the draft indicates that many NFL teams may have concerns about his size and physical traits. While some see him as a potential backup player, others believe he could develop into a quality starter with time and opportunity. The Eagles, who historically undervalue linebackers, are unlikely to prioritize Trotter over higher draft picks or costly free agent signings in the near future.
Trotter’s biggest challenge this season will be standing out in a crowded linebacker room filled with undersized players who thrive on support from the defensive line. With veteran linebackers like Nakobe Dean and Devin White ahead of him on the depth chart, Trotter may find himself waiting for his chance to make an impact on the field.
In conclusion, while the Eagles may not immediately rely on Trotter as a starter, there is potential for him to carve out a meaningful role on the team in the coming seasons. His development and success will depend on his ability to adapt to the NFL level and make the most of his opportunities when they arise.
