Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Practice

Sunday’s Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp Practice Recap

Sunday marked the seventh Philadelphia Eagles training camp practice ahead of the 2024 season. Today’s session was not padded. It went for about 90 minutes and featured a light drizzle at times. Here’s what I observed at the NovaCare Complex.

Eagles Practice Notes

JALEN HURTS UPDATE: QB1 turned in another good practice. Hurts was mostly efficient while also mixing in some highlight throws to his top two receivers. During an 11-on-11 period, Hurts dropped the ball in the bucket to DeVonta Smith deep down the right sideline. Facing a gotta-have-it touchdown during a red zone situation, Hurts gave A.J. Brown a chance to make a play on a 50-50 jump ball to beat Isaiah Rodgers for a touchdown. Hurts also had a connection with Britain Covey in 7-on-7 for over 20 yards. The ball was a little low, which made Covey have to go with a sliding catch (nice job by him), but it was placed where no defender could’ve had a chance at it. Hurts also avoided pointlessly taking off running after holding onto the ball for too long; his decision-making was quick. Hurts has still yet to throw a pick this summer. He’s really only put the ball in harm’s way, like, twice? And it’s not like he’s merely been a Checkdown Charlie trying to avoid interceptions at all costs. Good stuff.

EAGLES INJURY UPDATES:

  • Landon Dickerson (knee) returned to practice.
  • Mekhi Becton (illness) did not practice. One would imagine he’ll be back real soon.
  • Ditto for Eli Ricks (illness).
  • Tyler Steen (ankle) missed his fourth straight practice.
  • Parris Campbell (groin) is a new addition to the injury report; he did not practice.
  • Mekhi Garner (hamstring) missed his second straight practice.
  • Josh Jobe (concussion) was upgraded to limited.
  • Brandon Smith (concussion) did not practice.
  • Oren Burks (knee) hasn’t practiced since the first day of camp.
  • Trevor Keegan seemingly got banged up during practice but he didn’t have to visit the trainer’s tent or go back inside the facility.

Cornerback Training Camp Battle

Isaiah Rodgers took the first first-team cornerback reps across from Darius Slay in 11-on-11. That’s now four days for Rodgers (three in a row) and three for Kelee Ringo. Perhaps Rodgers is pulling ahead? That said, Rodgers did give up a couple completions on Sunday (including A.J.’s jump ball touchdown catch). Quinyon Mitchell was the first-team nickel cornerback.

Linebacker Training Camp Battle

For the seventh day in a row, Devin White and Zack Baun were the first first-team linebackers in 11-on-11. Nakobe Dean had another practice where he did some good things as a run defender and blitzer but looked like a liability in coverage.

Right Guard Training Camp Battle

With Steen and Becton both out, it was Brett Toth lining up at first-team right guard. Toth had two good blocks on Jalen Carter in OL vs. DL 1-on-1. Toth also had a good run block in team drills but he did contribute to some pressure allowed.

QB2 Training Camp Battle

Pickett could’ve been flagged for intentional grounding during a situational drill late in practice. Tanner McKee recognized a weakness in the Eagles’ coverage that allowed him to quickly throw to an open Jacob Harris for a first down and then some. McKee had two good completions to E.J. Jenkins on back-to-back reps. McKee should be gaining ground on Pickett.

First-team Offense Situation

Plus 40-yard line, 55 seconds left, down four points, one timeout to work with. Baun was the sole linebacker on the field with Maddox and Quinyon Mitchell both in. On fourth down, Hurts hit A.J. Brown for the first down. The Eagles then spiked the ball with 0:06 left and that was the end of that series.

Additional Highlights

James Bradberry put a pop on Britain Covey that prevented the WR from holding on for a catch. Milton Williams continues to impress as both a run-stuffer and pass rusher. Kudos to Moro Ojomo and Cam Jurgens had a high snap that did not help Hurts against a blitz. Carter earned pats on the helmet from multiple teammates after stuffing an interior run by Kenny Gainwell. Rookies getting first-team reps.

While lining up at left tackle, Fred Johnson did a real nice of handling a stunt. E.J. Jenkins had a nice catch-and-run moment on a pass that went over the middle. Albert O had his best day (by far) so far with a couple catches. P.J. Mustipher got in the backfield for a “TFL.” Joseph Ngata double caught a ball along the left sideline in 7-on-7. Shaquan Davis had multiple catches with the third team. Terrell Lewis deflected a pass at the line of scrimmage to cause an incompletion.

Conclusion

Overall, it was an eventful practice that showcased the talent and competition present at the Philadelphia Eagles training camp. Fans can look forward to an exciting 2024 season with a promising roster and dedicated players.
