The Eagles offense struggled against the 49ers on Sunday, and didn’t get into the end zone until the third quarter. Quarterback Jalen Hurts spoke to reporters after the game and addressed leaving the game to be checked for a concussion, their redzone struggles, and how he feels after the game. He also addressed playing from behind and their need to execute better.
Here’s what the QB had to say:
On being evaluated for a concussion
Hurts was asked about leaving the field to be evaluated for a concussion, and the QB explained that everyone was just doing their jobs. He was ready to come back when everybody felt he was ready to, but he didn’t do it to prove anything.
“It wasn’t about showing anybody anything. It was more so that the game was not over. Just trying to keep fighting.”
On their redzone execution
“When you think about, you know, how important it is to start fast, and I feel like we started with good rhythm. Good tempo. Good execution for the most part. We just kind of weren’t able to connect and execute like we wanted to in the red zone.
When you’re playing a good team like that, every little thing matters. That’s a credit to them and the way they played today and how they executed. I think for us we just have to do a better job – a better job of controlling things we can and play cleaner. They played well and took advantage of their opportunities. That’s a really good football team. Really great players. They did a great job today.”
Hurts also admitted that they had made a big jump in their redzone effectiveness the past couple games, but weren’t able score enough on Sunday. Hurts also addressed his sack in the first quarter which forced the offense to settle for a field goal.
“I just slipped. Just slipped, I was trying to make a play, extend the play, had an opportunity there, but that’s kind of what it is. Some things happen, we’ll watch the film, I can’t really speak on that much now, but when we watch the film we’ll look at it and learn from it. Definitely take it with a growth mindset approach.”
On his feelings post-game
Hurts said that the mentality is always the same, win — find ways to win.
“I think this is a moment where you go back and you reflect on it. You learn from it like every win. You know you treat them all the same. When you win or when you lose. It’s about, ‘What can I learn from this?’ So you know the process remains the same in terms of how we respond and how we approach it. Just have to be self-critical, as we always are. Analyze everything as it’s supposed to be and respond.”
He later said that it’s not about wins and losses, it’s about playing to their standard — and when they do, they win — and they didn’t do that on Sunday.
On playing from behind
The QB said it’s all about execution, regardless of what the situation is on the field, they need to execute. When they’re able to execute and get a rhythm going, or are complimenting each other in all three phases of the game, they’re pretty good.
“When we’re playing complimentary football we’re pretty darn good and we just have to do that, we have to do more of that, and so that just takes preparation, that takes, you know, being eager and having a growth mindset and wanting to learn and everybody is going to want to do that – everybody needs to want to do that.”
Hurts later talked about feeling the deficit during the game, and he said that there’s always momentum swings, but it falls back to how they execute. When they execute at a high level, good things happen, so he’s eager to assess the film and learn from this game.
Other notables
- Hurts said he wasn’t part of the decision to punt on 4th-and-2, and while they always look to be aggressive, they also respect whatever call is made in those situations. Once again, the QB said that they really just need to execute, because they shouldn’t have been in that situation to begin with.
- Hurts also noted that nothing changes in their process, and win, lose, or draw, they’ll do a deep, deep dive into what they need to improve. There’s no difference now, and it’s about how they respond, and how they plan to grow from this.
