Jaguars dismiss defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell and other staff members

Published on

Following the Jaguars’ late-season collapse, they will be making a major move by firing Mike Caldwell after his second season as defensive coordinator, Fox Sports’ Greg Auman reports.

Despite struggling on both sides of the ball to close out the season, Caldwell will be the first domino to fall. The Jaguars hired the former NFL linebacker after his stint as linebackers coach for the Super Bowl-winning Buccaneers. It is not unexpected to see Jacksonville make a significant change.

As expected, the changes will not stop at Caldwell. Jacksonville is also parting ways with its defensive staff, according to NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport. Despite the Jaguars’ defense ranking 10th overall in DVOA, their performance declined down the stretch, allowing at least 28 points in four of their final six games, all resulting in losses. After a promising 8-3 start, the team finished the season at 9-8.

Among the members of Caldwell’s defensive staff are D-line coach Brentson Buckner, pass-game coordinator Deshea Townsend, inside linebackers coach Tony Gilbert, safeties coach Cody Grimm, and senior defensive assistant Bob Sutton. The Jaguars ranked 26th in pass defense. There have been no changes on the offensive side of the ball yet, even after OC Doug Pederson handed play-calling reins to OC Press Taylor this season. Defensive assistants Rory Segrest, Bill Shuey, and Patrick Reilly will be retained.

The Jaguars made significant moves on both sides of the ball in 2022, signing free agents and drafting Travon Walker with the No. 1 overall pick, as well as first-round linebacker Devin Lloyd. Despite these changes, the Jaguars’ defense did not improve, as reflected in DVOA ranking Caldwell’s 2022 defense 26th. The Jaguars are now set to employ their fourth defensive coordinator in five years by 2024.
