The importance of the defensive signal-caller in a defense coordinated by Brian Flores cannot be overstated, especially considering Flores’ tendency to rotate most of his personnel. ESPN reports that second-year linebacker Ivan Pace is currently the frontrunner to take on this role for the Vikings in 2024.
This comes as no surprise as Pace, even as an undrafted rookie, took over the green dot responsibilities when veteran Jordan Hicks was sidelined with an injury last season. Pace played in 100% of the team’s defensive snaps during Hicks’ absence and accumulated 102 total tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception in 17 games (11 starts).
Pace’s impressive rookie performance, backed by strong advanced metrics and coverage skills, makes him a compelling choice to fill the signal-caller role following Hicks’ departure to the Browns in free agency.
The Vikings also bolstered their linebacker corps by signing Blake Cashman and Kamu Grugier-Hill, adding to a defensive makeover that included the acquisition of several other players and the selection of Dallas Turner in the draft.
Although Cashman and Grugier-Hill are under consideration for the green dot role, Pace’s experience and previous success in the position give him an edge according to ESPN.
Head coach Kevin O’Connell commented, “[Pace] has had a very good spring, just with the type of communication [Flores] is putting on his plate.”
Pace himself expressed readiness for the role, stating, “I know they brought in a couple linebackers that have more experience and stuff, but if they trust me enough to have the green dot, I’m ready for it.”
Undrafted free agents like Pace sign three-year contracts and become extension-eligible after two years of service, indicating the potential for a significant pay increase if Pace continues to excel in the upcoming season.
