Jim Harbaugh remains a topic of discussion in connection to a potential return to the NFL, with interest from multiple teams. However, it appears that one team, in particular, is in the lead to secure him.
The Chargers are still “the most likely destination” for Harbaugh should he choose to leave Michigan this offseason, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network (video link). Throughout the season, there has been speculation about Harbaugh’s potential return to the NFL, especially following a national championship win. Los Angeles was the first team to interview him, holding a two-day, in-person meeting.
Prior to the interview, the Chargers tested Harbaugh’s interest, and the team is an appealing option, particularly with the presence of quarterback Justin Herbert on a long-term deal. Harbaugh has also been linked to the Raiders and the Falcons. Atlanta interviewed Harbaugh earlier this week and is arranging a second interview.
Although the Falcons have shown interest in Bill Belichick, the team also has other experienced coaching candidates, such as Mike Vrabel , to consider. Therefore, the team may have several options aside from Harbaugh as they await the outcome of his second interview. The 60-year-old coach is one of the most high-profile names in the 2024 hiring cycle, especially in relation to the Chargers.
Harbaugh also has the option to stay in Ann Arbor for another year. After leading the Wolverines to an undefeated season, he is in negotiations for a new contract, seeking protection from being fired due to any potential NCAA sanctions against Michigan. Although he met with the Vikings two years ago and the Broncos last offseason, all signs point to 2024 being the year he returns to an NFL sideline.
If Harbaugh does make the move, the Chargers will have a roster that has not lived up to expectations. Deficiencies on defense, in particular, led to Brandon Staley‘s dismissal, and general manager Tom Telesco was also let go. The replacement for Telesco has not been identified, and the relationship between the new GM and Harbaugh (if he ends up in L.A.) will undoubtedly be a significant storyline to watch. For now, the Chargers are still the favorites to finalize a deal with Harbaugh.
