Brian Daboll has indicated that Don Martindale’s time as defensive coordinator of the Giants could soon be over. According to a report by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan and Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Martindale is not expected to remain in place for 2024. The news comes after Martindale has resigned, as confirmed by Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News.
When speaking to the media earlier on Monday, Daboll said he expected both Martindale and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka to remain in their posts. However, Martindale has decided to move on, seeking other opportunities for both DC and head coaching positions.
Martindale enjoyed a successful debut season in New York, helping the Giants reach the divisional round of the postseason last year. However, the team faced setbacks in 2023, and a reported rift emerged between Martindale and Daboll. Despite attempts to downplay the significance of the report, it is now clear that Martindale will be moving on to new opportunities.
The 60-year-old spent one year as the Broncos’ DC before a lengthy tenure with the Ravens. After joining the Giants, he had an uncertain future, and despite being well-liked among his players, his tenure in New York has proven to be rather short-lived.
With most of New York’s staffing changes coming on special teams and defense, Daboll will have a number of significant additions to make to his staff over the coming days and weeks.
