Larry Allen, known as one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history, passed away suddenly while vacationing with his family in Mexico on Sunday. He was 52.
Allen quickly became a key blocker for the Cowboys after coming from Division II Sonoma State, playing a total of 14 seasons in the NFL. After spending 12 years in Dallas, he finished his career with two seasons in San Francisco. Allen was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2013 as a first-ballot member. The cause of his death has not been disclosed.
“Larry, known for his great athleticism and incredible strength, was one of the most respected, accomplished offensive linemen to ever play in the NFL,” the Cowboys said in a statement. “His versatility and dependability were also signature parts of his career. Through that, he continued to serve as inspiration for many other players, defining what it meant to be a great teammate, competitor and winner.”
Allen’s talents earned him a spot on both the 1990s and 2000s All-Decade teams, showcasing his skills as a guard and tackle for the Cowboys. He was a seven-time All-Pro and 11-time Pro Bowler, solidifying his legacy as one of the best in the league.
