Following a brief stint in New England, Ezekiel Elliott has returned to where it all began for him. The former Cowboys running back signed a one-year contract worth up to $3MM on Monday, expressing his excitement to return to Dallas in his remarks about the agreement.
“This was my priority. Doing what I could do to get back here,” Elliott said (via Clarence Hill Jr. of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram). “I have a lot left to accomplish here. I’m excited to get back with the team and chase that ring.”
Prior to the draft, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear that Elliott could return regardless of any rookie additions. With no running back selected during the draft, it was expected that the 28-year-old would rejoin the Cowboys. Elliott’s time with the Patriots in 2023 saw him generate modest rushing numbers (642 yards on a 3.5 yards per carry average).
Despite his past knee injury, Elliott mentioned that he is in better physical condition now than he was in his recent Cowboys season. With the departure of Tony Pollard, who served as the primary back in 2023, there is now an opening at the top of the depth chart for Elliott to reclaim his position.
Jones has expressed confidence in Elliott’s ability to lead the backfield based on his performance in New England. Elliott took on a starting role after Rhamondre Stevenson’s injury and was a key player in the Patriots’ offense. His versatility as a receiver, with 51 receptions for 313 yards and two touchdowns, could earn him playing time on third downs in addition to his role in short-yardage situations.
“I still see myself as a starting player,” Elliott affirmed, echoing Jones’ sentiments. “I had the opportunity to start towards the end of last season and felt comfortable in that role. I am eager to contribute to the team in any way I can.”
In addition to Elliott, the Cowboys also have running backs Rico Dowdle, Deuce Vaughn, and Malik Davis on the roster. While the team has not yet unveiled its undrafted free agent class, there could be potential additions to the backfield. With $5.25MM in remaining cap space, the team may consider bringing in another veteran player, but both the team and Elliott are enthusiastic about the possibilities that come with their reunion.
