Parallel Strategies for Using 2024 Quarterback Carousel

Continuing from the first part, we are now looking at what options will be available in the 2024 quarterback carousel. This part is critical as demand for quarterbacks typically exceeds the available supply. There are three potential routes for teams to upgrade at quarterback: free agency, the draft, and the trade market. While bargain options can be found in all three scenarios, it’s important to remember that you usually get what you pay for.

Free Agency

Some notable quarterbacks on expiring contracts include Cousins, Tannehill, Garoppolo, Mayfield, and Dobbs. Among them, Cousins stands out as the most sought-after, with an intriguing situation surrounding his contract negotiations with the Vikings. Dobbs is also an interesting prospect, despite recent turnover issues, given his ability to adapt to new teams and his intelligence, having earned a degree in rocket science. Tannehill and Garoppolo have experience but also face uncertain job prospects due to concerns about their long-term viability and injury histories, meaning their options will largely depend on the coaching cycle. Mayfield, on the other hand, has had a noteworthy resurgence with the Buccaneers and could be open to another short-term contract with the team. The outcome for these quarterbacks could largely depend on coaching decisions and playoff performances that could shape their future prospects.

NFL Draft

While the college football season is almost over, we have a good idea of who the top quarterback prospects for the 2024 draft class are. USC QB Caleb Williams and North Carolina QB Drake Maye are considered the top candidates, with Williams being a creative playmaker and Maye being physically talented with a powerful arm. The team picking first in the draft will ultimately influence which player goes first, based on their preferred playing style and system.
