Evaluation of Eagles Rookies in the Cardinals Game

The Eagles had a disappointing loss to the Cardinals, marking their fourth loss in five weeks. This defeat will have far-reaching consequences for both the team and coaching staff, as their strong 10-1 start to the season has now dwindled, and they are heading towards a wild card spot in the NFC playoffs.

In this game, the Eagles rookies played a significant role, especially on the defensive side. This level of rookie involvement would have been unexpected at the beginning of the season, but due to injuries and subpar performance, several Eagles rookies have been thrust into significant roles with varying levels of success.

Jalen Carter: C+

While Carter managed to sack Kyler Murray in the game, he was not very visible throughout the four quarters. The Cardinals ran for over 200 yards against the Eagles defense, and Carter struggled to stop their offensive advances. It was a disappointing end to a season that began with promise for Carter.

Nolan Smith: C

Nolan Smith was involved in the Eagles’ defensive lineup but failed to make a significant positive impact. One positive aspect of Smith’s performance is his high level of hustle, which is more than can be said for many other players on the defense at the moment.

Sydney Brown: B+

Sydney Brown deserves credit for his 99-yard interception return for a touchdown. While the interception was due to a Cardinals miscommunication, Brown’s ability to weave through tacklers for the length of the field was impressive. However, Brown continues to find himself out of position on many plays, and his usage puts a lot of pressure on him. It is hoped that a more defined role going forward will help him settle in.

Kelee Ringo: C+

Ringo’s strong performance streak came to an end in this game. He was targeted more by the Cardinals and gave up a late-game touchdown, putting additional stress on the rookie cornerback. However, Ringo continues to excel as a tackler, showing promise as a talented defensive back.

Eli Ricks: C

Eli Ricks had a mixed game, with some flashes of good coverage but struggles as a tackler. He had difficulty stopping the run and was notably juked out by Michael Carter for a long gain. Ricks’s lack of physicality, due to being on the lighter side, was evident in this game.

Ben VanSumeren: D

After an average NFL debut, Ben VanSumeren had a challenging game against the Cardinals. Arizona’s offensive strategy focused on attacking the Eagles in the middle of the field and taking advantage of their weak linebacker group, with VanSumeren often late in attacking the run and allowing extra yardage.

The Rest:

  • Moro Ojomo had a few snaps at defensive tackle while the Eagles struggled on the ground. Perhaps more reps are needed to keep the group fresher.
