Eagles Trio May Lead to Decent Postseason Defense

The Philadelphia Eagles are facing the playoffs in just over a week, and the expectations for improvement on defense have not been met. Despite finishing last season with the No. 2 ranked defense in the NFL, the Eagles have struggled this year after losing defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon and five starters in 2022.

As the regular season nears its end, the 11-5 Eagles find themselves near the bottom of the league in several key defensive categories, including pass defense (No. 28), points per game (29), third-down defense (30), and red-zone defense (30). Overall, the team ranks No. 23 on defense, prompting head coach Nick Sirianni to make changes to the coaching staff.

Coach Sirianni made the decision to demote first-year defensive coordinator Sean Desai for Matt Patricia after a loss to Dallas in early December. This move was seen as a panic reaction by many, and the results have not been positive. With the team struggling, it is clear that changes will need to be made in the offseason to address the issues on defense.

The Eagles will likely start as the No. 5 seed in the playoffs, facing the tough challenge of three postseason road games if they want to make it to the Super Bowl. However, their chances in the playoffs will heavily rely on the defense’s ability to transform from inferior to serviceable.

To improve the defense, the Eagles will be looking to three key players – Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay, slot corner Avonte Maddox, and linebacker Zach Cunningham. Slay, who recently underwent knee surgery, is expected to return soon, which will have a positive impact on the defense. Maddox, who returned last week after a torn pec injury, is also expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the defense.

Cunningham, who has missed several games due to injuries, is also on track to return and is considered one of the team’s best linebackers. His presence on the field will be crucial for the Eagles’ success in the playoffs.

With the playoffs approaching, the Eagles are hopeful that the return of these key players will help shore up their defense and give them a fighting chance in the postseason.

Despite the challenges they have faced, the team is determined to make the most of their playoff opportunity and will be working hard to overcome their defensive struggles. Only time will tell if they can rise to the occasion and make a strong playoff run.
