Renowned for his time as Washington’s starting quarterback in the late 1980s, Doug Williams continues to be a part of the organization. While his role has undergone changes in recent years, another adjustment is on the horizon.
Initially moved away from the personnel realm early in Ron Rivera‘s tenure with the team, Williams is now back in the front office mix. The Commanders announced on Tuesday that the veteran executive will serve as a senior advisor to GM Adam Peters. This role is familiar to Williams, who had been recommended for GM positions by the Fritz Pollard Alliance in the late 2010s.
As the first Black quarterback to start a Super Bowl, leading Washington to victory over Denver with four touchdown passes, Williams previously held the position of senior VP of player personnel for three years from 2017-19. Upon Rivera’s arrival, Williams was transitioned to senior VP of player development. Despite changes in GM leadership, Williams remains a core figure and will collaborate with Peters’ associates Martin Mayhew and Marty Hurney.
The Commanders have also hired Texans director of player development Dylan Thompson to work as their senior director of team support and advancement. Additionally, Washington is parting ways with senior VP of football strategy Eugene Shen, while retaining executives like Hurney and Rob Rogers.
Various new hires have joined the Commanders under Peters’ leadership, including Doug Drewry as their manager of football research and development. The team has also brought on coaching analysts Connor Nickel and Travis Ho, football operations coordinator Matt Peterson, football ops assistant Cyrus Daniels, and college scout Dustin Regan, among others.
