With reduced playing time last season, Emmanuel Ogbah became a crucial player for the Dolphins due to injuries to their top edge rushers. Despite Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips expected to return in 2024, Miami is making a cap-driven decision to release Ogbah.
The Dolphins are set to part ways with Emmanuel Ogbah, as reported by ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter. Ogbah’s demotion under DC Vic Fangio last season made his release imminent.
The Dolphins, who are currently over the 2024 cap by $38MM, will save $13.7MM by releasing Ogbah. Ogbah, who was on a four-year, $65.4MM deal, had a $14.93MM base salary for the upcoming season that became unrealistic given his situation with the team.
Ogbah, a productive pass rusher, suffered a torn triceps midway through his previous contract, affecting his performance. Despite a strong showing with nine sacks in each of the last two seasons, his raise did not pan out as expected. Ogbah will now hit free agency with decreased value.
While Miami tried to bolster its edge rushers with veterans in emergency situations, the team looks to rely on Chubb and Phillips under new DC Anthony Weaver for the upcoming season. With Chubb signed through 2026 and the possibility of locking down Phillips through 2025, the Dolphins are planning for the future.
Van Ginkel, who is set for free agency soon after his injury, joins the recovery process along with Phillips and Chubb. Miami aims to rebuild its edge-rushing corps for the 2024 season.
