Certain positions have experienced a surge in free agent value in recent years, such as quarterback, receiver, and defensive tackle. On the other hand, some positions have seen a decrease in interest from teams and fewer long-term commitments. Safety falls into the latter category, with several veteran players still without contracts. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reports that this year’s group of free agent safeties are likely to receive low-cost, incentive-based contracts this summer.
Xavier McKinney signed a lucrative deal with the Packers, while Antoine Winfield Jr. became the highest-paid defensive back with the Buccaneers. However, veteran safeties like Justin Simmons, Jamal Adams, and Eddie Jackson have yet to find new teams. It is expected that these players may need to settle for one-year deals this summer to showcase their value for the following season.
As the NFL offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see if the lack of interest in veteran safeties is a temporary trend or indicative of a larger financial shift at the position.
