The Commanders made changes at defensive end during last year’s trade deadline, despite the previous regime’s preferences. The team, however, held onto its experienced defensive tackles and continues to prioritize this position in early-round draft picks. A new addition joined the team in the second round this year.
Washington acquired Day 2 draft picks through trades, and their first second-round selection was Illinois DT Johnny Newton with the 36th overall pick. Newton has signed a four-year rookie deal with 86% guaranteed, according to KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson.
Newton’s first three years are fully guaranteed, and a portion of his fourth-year base salary will also be guaranteed. Following a foot injury, Newton underwent a second foot surgery and is currently recovering. The team is hopeful he will be ready for Week 1.
Newton faced challenges due to foot injuries leading up to the draft, but still had an impressive collegiate career with notable accomplishments. He will compete for playing time with teammates like Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, further strengthening the defensive line under the Ron Rivera regime.
