The Commanders took an unconventional approach by conducting interviews for a top front office position while keeping its general manager in a holding pattern. Rumors were swirling about the departure of Martin Mayhew following Ron Rivera, but the team opted for a reevaluation under the leadership of Adam Peters, the new front office boss.
Peters’ previous connection with Mayhew during their time with the 49ers seemed to open the door for Mayhew to remain in Washington. It appears that Peters still values Mayhew, as he is expected to stay with the team in 2024 after joining Commanders staffers at Senior Bowl workouts in Mobile, Ala. According to ESPN.com’s John Keim.
Mayhew, who was hired to work alongside Rivera in 2021, joined the team after serving on John Lynch’s staff. Despite a period of reevaluation, it seems that he will continue with the team for a fourth year.
Mayhew, 58, has a rich history in Washington, having played as a cornerback for the team during the dominant 1991 season. His second tenure as a GM following his time with the Lions has been a point of interest and he has managed to stick around despite changes in ownership after a disappointing season.
There were rumors suggesting that Josh Harris influenced the decision to trade Montez Sweat and Chase Young on deadline day, leading to a decline in the team’s performance. The Commanders ultimately lost their final eight games, resulting in Rivera’s firing. Mayhew, Marty Hurney, and Eric Stokes were also rumored to be on the chopping block alongside Rivera.
Despite the uncertainty that often comes with representing a team at the Senior Bowl, Mayhew is expected to stay alongside Peters. It remains unclear whether Stokes and Hurney, who previously worked with Rivera in Carolina, will join him for the long haul.
