Mike Evans was a key focus for the Buccaneers in the offseason, agreeing to a two-year, $41MM deal before free agency. This keeps him alongside receiver Chris Godwin for at least another season, although Godwin is in the final year of his contract.

Godwin has a three-year, $60MM deal and will look to capitalize on the rising receiver market. There currently are no extension negotiations for Godwin. ESPN’s Jenna Laine reports that Tampa Bay is waiting to see how Godwin adapts to the new offense under OC Liam Coen before committing to a new deal. Coen replaces the departed Dave Canales.
The change in scheme will move Godwin to the slot position after playing primarily outside last season. His best performances have come from the slot, potentially setting him up for success in 2024. A strong season could lead to a new contract or enhance his free agency value for next year.
Despite a slight downturn in touchdowns in 2023, Godwin exceeded 1,000 receiving yards for the third consecutive season. Having been targeted over 121 times since 2019, he remains a key player in Tampa’s passing game. The addition of new receiver Jalen McMillan and Trey Palmer could impact Godwin’s role in the future. Keep an eye on his performance and its implications for his contract situation this season.
